A recent study published in Arthritis Research & Therapy (Arthritis Res Ther  2011, 13:R37; doi:10.1186/ar3270) has demonstrated a statistically significant correlation between blood lead levels and both the incidence and severity of osteoarthritis (OA).  The study evaluated more than 1,600 subjects and found that those patients with the highest quartile of blood lead levels had a 27% higher chance of having radiographically (X-Ray) diagnosed OA, a 34% higher chance of having greater severity of OA, and a 46% higher chance of having OA bilaterally (i.e. both knees).
